Lunachicks – your coach is very proud of how hard you played Saturday in such nasty weather. Here’s a note I posted on Facebook letting everyone know how hard you played and the conditions you endured:

A lot of my friends here on Facebook are from Mebane, so I wanted to share something with you all. Most of you know I coach a spirited group of 12 year old girls – The Lunachicks. They did something today that made me extremely proud as their coach, so I figured I’d embarrass them a little bit.

While most of you were still asleep this morning, knowing that today’s matches had been canceled, the Lunachicks were dragging themselves out of bed to get on their way to a 9AM match in Greensboro. Since Greensboro has a set of artificial turf fields, they moved a number of Classic matches out of Bryan Park to the turf fields.

So at 9AM, with steady rain falling and temperatures hovering around 36 degrees, the Lunachicks took the field to play 96 Greensboro Gold. Despite the conditions, they played extremely hard, on a surface they’d never played on before. By the 2nd half, the light rain had become heavier, and the girls played on, determined to get a point. For 57 minutes, they held Greensboro scoreless, with both teams having solid chances, but nobody able to put the ball in the net. Greensboro finally managed to score with three minutes left, and the Lunachicks went home, freezing cold, soaked to the bone, and begging the car heater to warm up faster. Regardless of the score, this group of girls braved miserable conditions and played some hard fought soccer – something they should be extremely proud of.

Your coach is extremely proud of you ladies!

Coach Mike

We’re halfway through our regular season, and I’ve seen a LOT of improvement. You’ve finally proven to yourselves that you can play at this level. We still have a lot of work to do, but you should be very proud of the effort you’ve put in these past few weeks.

Here are details and directions for this weekend's matches

Our regular season continues as we face off against Burlington White (Saturday – Away) and GUFC Blitz (Sunday – Home)

Our Burlington match is ‘away’ at Springwood park – about a 15 minute drive from the soccer complex. Here is a map and directions

The address is 1450 Springwood Church Rd for those with a GPS. And yes, you CAN take the Hwy 61 exit and come in the back way on Whitsett Park Rd. I’ve found almost no difference time wise.

Springwood closes quickly when it rains, so I’m thinking Saturday is a 50/50 shot. We’ll keep you posted on any reschedule if they do close their fields.

If the rain holds off we’ll be doing pictures at 12:45 at the Mebane complex then we’ll caravan from there to Springwood for our match at 2:30. The girls wanted to wear their Yellow jerseys in the team picture, so have them wear yellow. However, make sure they’re in their Blue for the away match.

Blue *jerseys* that is. The girls worked VERY hard in practice both Monday and yesterday. The coaches felt they had earned their uniforms back and we hope it’ll carry over into our matches this weekend.

Our match against the GUFC Blitz is at home Sunday at 4PM. Arrive at 3PM and wear yellow!

We’ll be pushing the girls hard this weekend – not to ‘win’ but to play smart. The scores this weekend are meaningless. We want to see the girls start to play smart soccer and move the ball around the field with ease. We know they have the 1v1 skills to go up against most teams we face, but we have to do a better job moving the ball and creating opportunities, especially when under pressure. The full field practice yesterday helped them see that.

Nicole and Micaela worked very hard both in our last match and the past few practices. This was a tough choice because all of the girls worked VERY hard – but they put in that little ‘extra’ and will be our captains for the next two weeks. Then we’ll choose captains for the tournaments.
